Frey Bike

Choosing cycling in winter can not only help riders get better body conditions and improve immunity but also help improve their ability to control electric mountain bikes. Those who ride in winter also can explore more different scenery in the snow.

While winter weather and road conditions are complicated, riders need to prepare before riding.

Here we outline 8 key points to consider when facing a winter of cycling.

Time: At around 5 a.m., it reaches the lowest temperature of the day. That's to say, cyclists had better not choose to go out in the early morning cycling to prevent being hit by the cold. Cycling should be arranged after sunrise and before sunset, which can ensure you won't have a fever or cold.

Light: The days are short in winter, and the weather situation is complex. In the case of unclear road conditions, riders can install warning lights for their electric bikes. Generally, white headlights are installed on the handlebar, red rear lights are installed on the Seatpost, and some lights are installed on the helmet or handlebars. Make sure the lights are fully powered before departure, and be sure to turn them on when in poor visibility. You can also purchase fluorescent or reflective clothing. Make sure that you can see the road conditions during cycling, and that you can be seen by other car owners and passers-by at the same time, to improve your safety.

Tire: Before riding, distinguishing the road condition and choosing the right tire pressure is vital. Especially on icy roads, it's easy to slip, and the bikes require a lower tire pressure or softer tires to provide better grip. Electric mountain bikes with fat tires can provide better smooth support for cycling which is a good choice we recommend.

Clothing: Many beginners would make sure they are wearing clothes that can withstand the wind and cold, but with the accelerated pace of riding, the heat of the body gradually rises, and wearing too thick may appear to sweat situation. Experienced cyclists generally follow one principle of “multiple parts”: ventilate and snug underwear worn at the bottom; the Fleece clothes are in the middle, which is the first choice for many outdoor athletes; the outer layer could be a windproof jacket or light vest, to ensure that surface temperature will not be lost by the cold wind.

It is also important to keep your hands and feet warm during cycling. After a long ride, the reaction ability and the bike-control ability will decrease. Therefore, appropriate gloves and sports shoes are necessary. And bracer, elbow pad, ankle guard, and kneepad also need to be considered. In addition, you must wear a helmet when riding. You also need a breathable velvet riding cap, an ear cap, and a scarf that can cover your mouth and nose.

Warm-up preparation: Stretching your limbs, moving muscles, jumping jacks... these functional movements can expand the mobility of the joint while reducing the probability of injury. Hold about 15 minutes to half an hour, these warm-up exercises can help you get into the state quickly.

Road conditions: It is recommended that the cycling speed should not be too fast, until you adapt to the road conditions and then start to gradually increase the speed, to ensure the stability of the body. Cyclists should not only pay attention to themselves but also pay attention to the other vehicles on the road. Be cautious, because the dark environment and slipped ground may affect the sensitivity and judgment of the owners. Try not to enter the blind area, and be ready to brake all the time when you are passing an intersection or curve.

Supplements: A long time and long-distance cycling may not be recommended in winter. If you still want to do this, you should be ready to get some supplements: hot water, chocolates, snacks, and others all can keep the body temperature and energy. Remember to eat these supplements every 20 minutes to avoid the possibility of hypoglycemia during cycling.

Cleaning: After cycling through the snow, mud, and ice, your electric mountain bike may be piled up with a lot of dirt. Especially the snow contains many salts, keep it for a long time may cause bike corrosion and damage. So after the ride, your electric bikes should be cleaned as soon as possible. After cleaning, the chain lubrication also needs to be kept up.
